Job Description

Title: Associate Pastor for NextGen

Purpose: To guide NextGen children and youth, from ages 0-18 (including preschool), to become followers of Jesus Christ; to ensure the church provides continuous Christ-focused care for all families with children; to engage children and youth in the community beyond the church; to encourage and equip parents to be the primary Christian educators of their children.

Supervision: The Associate Pastor for NextGen shall be under the direction of the Lead Pastor and shall be responsible to the Session, through its Personnel Committee, in all matters except those in which she/he is subject solely to the Presbytery of San Francisco.

Employment Status: This is an ordained (or on the path to ordination), full time, exempt position with benefits.

Evaluation: An annual performance evaluation will be performed by the Lead Pastor.


● Establish and nurture the strategic vision and direction of the burlpres NextGen ministry to aid in the spiritual growth of burlpres children and youth.
     ○ Cast an exciting vision for NextGen ministries that will engage current children and youth and attract those in the community.
     ○ Create and lead vibrant Sunday morning and other services as appropriate. Serve as one of the primary teachers of these services.
     ○ Generate curriculum for children and youth that is engaging and relevant to what they are facing in daily life.
      ○ Integrate NextGen programming into the entire church and create intergenerational and multicultural connections.
     ○ Participate in leadership for Sunday morning worship services and preach occasionally

● Establish an inviting environment and programming for children and youth.
     ○ Organize events and activities for children and youth to connect, grow, and serve in the church and in our community. ○ Re-vision an engaging and succinct Confirmation program for High School students to further develop and establish their faith foundations.
     ○ Develop meaningful pastoral relationships and connections with children and youth and their parents in order to guide them in their faith formation.

● Lead and provide oversight of children, youth, volunteers, NextGen Ministry staff and Preschool staff.
     ○ Effectively empower, lead, organize and equip parents and volunteers to be the primary Christian educators of the children and youth.
     ○ Supervisory responsibilities to include leading a team of NextGen Ministry and Preschool leaders.
     ○ Collaborate with Elders for Children and Youth, as well as a committee for Youth Ministries, to support NextGen ministry.

● Effectively and creatively communicate with children, youth, parents, and pastoral staff.
     ○ Be savvy with and utilize relevant social media channels. (e.g. Discord, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube)


● Have personal relationship and desire to grow in the love and knowledge of Christ
● Strong Biblical knowledge and ability to communicate it to all ages
● Ability to build strong and healthy relationships with students, adult leaders and families
● Commitment to reaching both churched and unchurched students ● Collaborative spirit with an ability to work with pastors, directors, staff, ministry leaders, the church body, and community
● Familiar with the latest curriculum (e.g. Orange Curriculum)
● Skilled in the use of computer software applications and social media communication channels ● Good interpersonal, organization, and communication skills
● Education: MDiv, ThM, or Youth Specialties degree
● Experience working with youth preferable

Part Time

NextGen Consultant

Title: NextGen Consultant – burlpres Students

Overview: Provide interim support and spiritual leadership for burlpres Students in Middle School and High School and their families. Partner with the burlpres NextGen Team to create an exciting, fun, age-appropriate and growing ministry that engages kids and helps them develop spiritually.

Supervision: The NextGen Consultant shall be under the direct supervision of the Lead Pastor and responsible to the Session through its Personnel Committee. The NextGen committee members will provide direction and assistance.

Status: Short-Term, Part-Time Position - contracted. No benefits. September 1st – December 21st , with possibility to extend if both parties in agreement. burlpres is currently searching for a youth pastor, anticipated to arrive early in ’22.

Evaluation: A brief weekly touch-base meeting will occur with the Lead Pastor.

• Prepare weekend programming for middle school and high school students. Middle school and high school students start out in the 11:00 service, then leave to be in a combined student session which lasts 40 minutes.
• Lead the weekend program.
• Employ online technology, if required during COVID to engage the group.
• Volunteer management o Schedule and build a team of volunteers to support programs. o Coach and train staff, elders and volunteers as necessary.
• Administration
     o Ensure that safety standards are maintained (e.g. Check-in, rosters, nametags)
     o Purchase supplies as necessary.
     o Assist with midweek and weekend check-in for the various NextGen programs.
     o Continue environmental improvements to enhance the student and family experience.

• 1 – 3 years of practical ministry experience.
• Experience leading/ volunteering in student ministry.
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in an area of concentration that has equipped him/her for vocational ministry, preferred.
